A SUMMER CAMP WHERE KIDS…..GROW HEALTH-FRIENDLY ‘ORGANIC’ FOOD AND HAVE FUN!

With the help, encouragement and expertise of Mr. Organic – and Shelly Covert – children will learn about the Principles, Practices and Procedures required to grow chemical-free food. Hands-on activities will includes ….

GOOD BUGS versus BAD BUGS

and much more including ….

ORGANIC KIDS CAMP AGENDA

MONDAY
9 am – 9:15″Good morning and Welcome!”

  • Introductions – who is who
  • 9:15-9:30 What’s happening? – we find out about some of the many things we will be doing during the week
  • Discuss what kids want to get out of the camp, what do you hope to learn and do
  • Do’s and dont’s – some basic rules we need to follow 
  • Brief presentation – by Mr. Organic and Shelly Covert, about the importance of locally grown health-friendly ‘organic’ food
  • 9:30-10:30 Composting- where it all starts, we will take food waste from the market up to the chicken and sheep to feed, collect eggs and learning about farming chicken and heritage breed chickens. We get to take a peek at where Fridays pool party will take place.
  • 10:30-11:00 Morning break - time for that snack, brainstorming time: what grows in the Okanagan? What can we not grow here? why? Timing? Seasons? Cold Crops? What is your favorite fruit or vegetable?
  • 11:00-12:00 Getting Started! Lasagna Gardening – we make a start on a surprising way of growing food! We will make our 3 lasagna gardens in apple half bins.
  • 12:00-12:20 Lunch
  • 12:20-12:45 Activity Time – Free time, waterslide, jumping pillow, duck race, spider web. Sand hill.
  • 12:45-1:30- 1:30-2:15 Art Program with Diana Covert- campers will be divided into 2 age groups. First group
  • Choose your favorite fruit or vegetable, research a recipe that we can make this week for our feast on Friday.
  • Talk about taking pictures throughout the week for our journals, discuss t shirt ideas and video of our camp.
  • 2:15-3:15Farm Tour – tour the entire farm on the tour truck. Start at the table grapes and end at the shipping yard. A tour through the farm to see what we grow, when things come into season. We even get to taste as we go.
  • 3:15-3:30 Activity Time – Snack (suggest they start making their own camp journals – we supply the (basic) materials) Journal how to make a lasagna garden
  • 3:30-3:50 Activity Time – Jumping pillow, waterslide, duck races, spider web, sand hill.
  • 3:50-4:00 It’s a wrap! – where we take a look back at what we did, and what we will do tomorrow
  • 4 pm - Good Bye – Safe Journey Home - See you Tomorrow!

 
TUESDAY

  • 9 am – “Good Morning and Welcome!”
  • 9:00-9:15 Recap – a brief discussion about some of the things we did yesterday
  • 9:15-10:00 Sowing and Planting Organic Food – Plan what we want to plant in our lasagna gardens, what grows this time of year, companion planting. We have 3 lap tops break group into three to research what gets planted with what. Plot out gardens on chalk board
  • Morning Break – snack/write info from this morning in our journals
  • 10:00-11:30 Good bugs versus bad bugs…..by reading, looking at pictures and asking questions we find out which are the bad guys and which are the good guys. And then…..we go looking for them! Go out to the field with mason jars to do some collecting. Do a lady bug release.
  • 11:30-12:00 Activity Time- Jumping pillow, water slide, Duck races, Spider web, sand hill.
  • 12:00-12:20 Lunch
  • 12:20-1:50 Art Project with Diana Covert 45 minutes for each group
  • Choose pictures to print out for journals, make splatted tomato t shirts
  • 1:50-2:50 Edible Flowers – we learn about what flowers are safe to eat and then…..we plant our own edible flowers! (I will bring some ‘starters’ with me) We will also plant cilantro in flats and replant rosemary while we learn about many other yummy herbs planted around the market.
  • 2:50-3:40 Afternoon Break – snack/reading/colouring/crafts, choose pictures for our journals
  • Activity Time – (water slide) , jumping pillow, sand hill, spiderweb, duckraces
  • 3:40-4:00 It’s a wrap! – recap on today, entries in journals, what we learnt today
  • 4 pm – Good Bye – Safe Journey Home – See You Tomorrow! 

 
WEDNESDAY  

  • 9:00-9:15″Good Morning and Welcome!”
  • Quick Recap – what we did yesterday
  • 9:15-9:35 Take compost to chickens, collect eggs.
  • 9:35-11:00  we will bring out our water and a snack Out to the field to plant dill, harvest carrots and beets and replant. Lean about weeds. On the way back we will do some digging for worms.
  • 11:00-11:30 ‘The Wonder of Worms’ – by reading, looking at pictures and asking questions we learn about how worms do their ‘work’ in the soil and then……we will set up our backyard composter.
  • 11:30-11:45 Morning break – snack/reading/colouring/crafts, choose picture for journal
  • 11:45-12:15 Plant our Lasagna gardens.
  • 12:15-1:00 Lunch and free activity time
  • 1:00-2:30 Art with Diana
  • Work on step by step process for making and planning a lasagna garden make signs to laminate for our garden
  • 2:30-3:00 Activity time
  • 3:00-4:00 It’s a Wrap! – recap on today, journal entries, what we learnt finalize recipes for tomorrow and lists of what we need to bring to camp. Talk about music for our camp video.
  • 4 pm – Good Bye – Safe Journey Home – See You Tomorrow!

 
THURSDAY

  • 9:00-9:15 “Good Morning and Welcome!”
  • Quick recap – what we did yesterday
  • 9:15-11:15 Art project with Diana Covert , time to finish our paintings
  • Make invitations for our parents to join us for our feast on Friday afternoon or for a tour of what we have done at the end of the day. They may also write out their recipe(good copy for cookbook)
  • 1 hour per group Groups of 5 will work on their recipes with their favorite fruit or vegetable
  • 11:15- 11:45 Free activity
  • 11:45-12:00 Journals, choose pictures for journals.
  • 12:00 -12:20 Lunch
  • 12:20-1:30 The Organic Amazing Race groups divided into groups of 5
  • 1:30-3:00 Harvest time- we get to head out to the field and help harvest what is in season. We will even get to take some home on Friday.
  • 3:00-3:30 Afternoon Break – snack/reading/colouring/crafts
  • 3:30-4:00 It’s a wrap! - recap on the day, entries in journals, what we learnt
  • 4 pm – Good Bye – Safe Journey Home – See You Tomorrow!

 
FRIDAY 
“Good Morning and Welcome!”

  • Quick recap – on yesterday
  • 9:15-12:00 Bring water snack and lunch Survival hike searching for edible weeds and flowers, making an earth shelter,using a compass, what to do if you ever get lost, searching for bad plants poison ivy. SOS signals etc. We will even make our own fishing rods and try to catch a fish or two.
  • 12:00-3:00 POOL PARTY! POOL PARTY! Time to enjoy our feast!Play some volleyball. Watch our video of the camp.
  • 3.00- 4:00 pm head back to the market – ‘Show & Tell’ – get your parents to come early so that you can show them and tell them about ‘all’ the things you have been doing at the camp!
  • 4 pm – Good Bye – Save Journey Home – See You…..At The Next Camp!!
